Cheri Smith, Erin Poole, and Amanda Smith Obituary News: Family Remembered Cheri Smith, Erin Poole, and Amanda Smith After Fayetteville Homicide

A deep and heartbreaking tragedy has shaken the Fayetteville community following a deadly incident that claimed the lives of Cheri Smith, Erin Poole, and Amanda Smith on the night of January 25, 2026. Three members of one family were taken far too soon in an act of violence that has left loved ones and neighbors struggling to process an unimaginable loss.

According to the Fayetteville Police Department, officers were dispatched around 9:35 p.m. to the 5200 block of N. Sumac Circle after receiving reports of shots fired. Investigators later determined that Cheri Smith, 50; her adult son, Erin Poole, 29; and her adult daughter, Amanda Smith, 23, were inside their residence when an altercation occurred involving a known associate, Nijyle Lewis, 25, all of Fayetteville.

During the altercation, multiple gunshots were fired and a stabbing occurred. When officers and Emergency Medical Service personnel entered the home, they found Cheri Smith and Erin Poole suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were tragically pronounced deceased at the scene. Amanda Smith, also suffering from gunshot wounds, was transported to a local hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Nijyle Lewis, who was found suffering from multiple stab wounds after fleeing to a nearby residence for help, was transported to the hospital and is currently in stable condition. After a thorough review of witness statements, surveillance footage, and 9-1-1 calls, detectives with the Fayetteville Police Departmentโ€™s Homicide Unit, working closely with the Cumberland County District Attorneyโ€™s Office, have charged Lewis with three counts of first-degree murder. Warrants will be served as he continues to receive medical treatment. Authorities have confirmed this was an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the community.

Beyond the investigation and court proceedings lies an overwhelming human loss.

Cheri Smith was a mother whose life centered on love, family, and care for her children. She was a guiding presence, a protector, and a source of strength.

Erin Poole, a son and brother, was deeply loved and will be remembered for his heart, his spirit, and the bond he shared with his family.

Amanda Smith, just 23 years old, had her entire future ahead of herโ€”dreams yet to be fulfilled, milestones yet to be reached, and a life that should have been long and full.

Their lives mattered. Their names matter. And their absence leaves a silence that words cannot fill.

As Fayetteville mourns, we ask for continued prayers, compassion, and support for the family and friends left behind to carry this grief. May they find strength in one another, comfort in memories, and peace in knowing their loved ones will never be forgotten.
