It is with heavy hearts that the family of William “Tom” Thomas Swann of Good Hope, Alabama, announces his passing on March 23, 2026, at the age of 74. Tom’s life was one of dedication, service, and love—for his family, his community, and the countless students and neighbors whose lives he touched throughout his years.
Tom Swann was known for his devotion, hard work, and integrity. A retired science teacher, Tom taught at Dowling School, Jones Chapel, Hanceville High School, Cold Springs High School, and Wallace State Community College. Most of his teaching career was spent at Hanceville High School, where he secured grants for a science lab and pioneered the Applied Biology-Chemistry Program in Cullman County. One of his proudest achievements was completing NASA’s U.S. Space Academy in Huntsville, reflecting his lifelong passion for science and learning.
Beyond the classroom, Tom was an entrepreneur and community servant. In retirement, he built and operated a successful fire extinguisher business for ten years, demonstrating the same dedication he showed in teaching. He also devoted himself to volunteering, serving as a fireman, EMT, and fire chief at Arkadelpia Fire Department. Under his leadership, the department secured funding for a modern firehouse, and he oversaw the development of Arkadelphia Park. For his service, he was honored with the Outstanding Leadership Award for Firefighters in Cullman County.
Tom’s contributions extended to his church and faith. A devoted Gideon and church member, he taught Sunday school and Wednesday night services, spreading God’s word with the same passion he brought to every area of his life. His faith guided his actions, and he instilled in those around him a sense of integrity, compassion, and service.
Family was the center of Tom’s world. He is survived by his beloved wife, Linda Kaye Swann; children Kelsey Ashten Stewert (William), Andrea Elise Key (Ryan), Eric Nicholas Swann (Monica), and Patrick Kiel Swann; grandchildren Jadon, Ben, Isabella, Dallin, Mason, Zane, Blair, Jet, and Reid; great-grandchild Koepland; brothers Perry Lynn Swann and James Spencer Swann; and sister Gaylon Tyrone Baty. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie and Carrie Lee Swann.
Tom was a man of many passions. He enjoyed beekeeping, fishing, drawing, and spending time in his workshop. Alabama football and quiet moments with friends brought him joy, while his grandkids’ sports events were highlights of his days. Through it all, Tom’s sense of humor, artistic touch, and gentle guidance left an enduring mark on everyone he encountered.
Visitation will be held at Moss-Service Funeral Home, 1901 2nd Ave NW, Cullman, AL, on March 27, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tom will lie in state at Valley View Baptist Church, 4191 Co Rd 35, Hanceville, AL, on March 28, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. A committal service will conclude at the church from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The family expresses deep gratitude to Southern Care Hospice, especially nurses Lynsey Trussell and Madison Bennett, and to Steton Hayes for their compassionate support during Tom’s final days.
Tom Swann’s legacy is one of selfless service, unwavering faith, and genuine love for his community and family. He taught students, neighbors, and loved ones the importance of hard work, kindness, and living a life rooted in integrity and compassion. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
