A disturbing case out of Miami has drawn widespread attention after a young mother avoided prison despite admitting she tried to arrange the murder of her own child.
Jazmin Paez, now 20, pleaded guilty to multiple felony charges, including solicitation of first-degree murder, after authorities said she attempted to hire a hitman to kill her 3-year-old son.
According to prosecutors, Paez submitted a request through a website called “RentAHitman.com,” a known parody site that secretly cooperates with law enforcement. In her request, she allegedly provided specific details about her child, including his location and photos, and asked for the killing to be carried out quickly.
The plot was uncovered when the site’s operator flagged the request as credible and alerted police, leading to her arrest in 2023.
Despite the severity of the charges—which could have resulted in up to 40 years in prison—Paez reached a plea agreement that allowed her to avoid jail time. Instead, a judge sentenced her to:
2 years of strict community control
12 years of probation
Mandatory mental health evaluation and treatment
Prosecutors said her personal circumstances, including her young age, troubled background, and efforts to continue her education while on release, were factors in the decision.
As part of the sentence, Paez permanently lost parental rights and is prohibited from contacting her son, who has since been adopted by a family member.
The case has sparked debate over the justice system, with some questioning whether the punishment fits the seriousness of the crime, while others point to the role of mental health and rehabilitation in sentencing decisions.
