A Wisconsin mother is facing serious criminal charges after the death of her young daughter—marking the second child to die while under her care in recent years.
According to investigators, 27-year-old Katelyn Nardi has been charged with first-degree reckless homicide and child neglect resulting in death following the tragic incident involving her 5-year-old daughter.
Authorities say the child was found unresponsive in a bathtub after being left alone for several minutes. The mother reportedly told investigators she stepped away briefly to retrieve pajamas, but returned to find the girl submerged and unresponsive.
Prosecutors allege the situation involved far more than a momentary lapse in supervision. Court documents indicate the child had a known medical condition—epilepsy—and had not been receiving prescribed medication. Investigators also claim the child was left in unsafe conditions, including a dirty bathtub, despite prior warnings about the risks.
In a deeply troubling revelation, officials confirmed this is the second child to die while in the mother’s care. An infant daughter previously died in 2023, raising additional concerns about ongoing neglect and the safety of other children in the household.
During court proceedings, prosecutors described the case as demonstrating a profound disregard for the child’s life, while the defense argued the incident was a tragic accident rather than intentional harm.
The mother remains in custody on a significant bond, and further court hearings are expected as the case moves forward. Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing.
